Southern League – Western Division
Ashford 1 Cinderford Town 1
It was only one point which was disappointing but it was almost none as Cinderford took the lead in an isolated breakaway just one minute from the end. Fortunately Scott Todd secured an equaliser a minute later but on the run of play Ashford should have had this match sewn up well before then.
The first half had little quality about it but after the break Ashford dominated possession and seemingly had to score but it would just not go in, often thanks to the Cinderford keeper who pulled off one incredible save from a ferocious effort from Ben Whatford which had everyone applauding.
With none of the teams above them winning either, Ashford did not lose ground but the match at Brackley next Saturday, who enjoyed a good win at Bromsgrove is now the proverbial “six-pointer” for both clubs as they contest a play-off spot.
Saturday 5 Mar
Suburban League – Premier Division
Walton & Hersham Res 4 Ashford Res 2
This was a disappointing result for the Reserves who lost after being two goals ahead, thanks to 16 year olds, Matt Baxter and Ricky Wellard. It may have been different if Lee Simpson’s headed effort had not been controversially disallowed because Steve Willmore, making his come back after being out since November, was in an offside position, although not interfering in Ashford’s view. Had the goal stood it would have given the visitors a three-nil lead.
With the potential Under-13 team fizzling out, Ashford are now looking for a fully fledged adult ladies team to become Ashford Town Ladies from the start of next season. The team will in all probability be allowed to use the main pitch on Sundays and will thus satisfy any requirements.
Any interested parties should contact Secretary Alan Constable
Ashford are also looking to hire out the back pitch in midweek to any team interested, from the London Airport Midweek League or similar. The hire cost will be less than that charged by the Local Authority and the players will enjoy full changing and bar facilities after matches.
Again, anyone interested should contact Alan Constable.
